Historic Tropical Botanical Garden Near Kolkata Known for Its Palm Avenues and the Legendary Great Banyan Tree
Located on the western bank of the Hooghly River near Kolkata, the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden is one of the oldest botanical gardens in Asia and among the most historically significant plant collections in the world. Established in 1787 during the British colonial period, the garden spans more than 270 acres and serves as a living archive of tropical plant diversity from across India and Southeast Asia. Visitors will encounter broad tree-lined avenues, extensive collections of tropical trees and ornamentals, and numerous cultivated palms integrated throughout the landscape. Several long palm-lined walks create a distinctly tropical atmosphere and showcase the remarkable architectural diversity of the palm family. The garden is most famous for the enormous “Great Banyan Tree,” whose sprawling canopy covers several acres and appears like an entire forest unto itself. With its combination of botanical history, massive tropical specimens, and tranquil garden pathways, the site offers a remarkable glimpse into one of the world’s classic historic botanic gardens.
