About Beccariophoenix alfredii
Discovered only recently (mid-2000s), this is a solitary palm with a smooth, grey trunk that becomes ringed with leaf scars as it matures and can reach impressive heights in cultivation. The crown is full and symmetrical, holding 30–40 pinnate leaves that are bright to medium green, with gracefully drooping leaflets that give it a classic tropical silhouette despite its surprisingly cool-tolerant nature. Inflorescences emerge just below the leaf bases on thick, branched stalks and are cream to yellow in color, attracting a variety of pollinators. The fruits are ovoid, turning from green to dark purplish-black when ripe, each containing a single seed that resembles a small coconut. Though once confused with other Beccariophoenix species, B. alfredii is now recognized as distinct due to its high-plateau habitat and cold-tolerant physiology.

Cultivation Tips
Select a sunny, open location where it has room to show off its tall trunk and broad, coconut-like canopy. Young specimens appreciate partial sunlight, but mature palms thrive in full sun and develop their best form under bright exposures. Well-drained sandy or loamy soils are ideal, though this species is adaptable as long as water does not pool around the roots. Water generously during the warm months and reduce watering in cooler seasons, especially if grown in climates that approach its temperature tolerance thresholds. Feed with a balanced palm fertilizer three times per year to support strong trunk growth and deep green foliage.
