About Vonitra utilis
This species grows along streams in moist forest areas. It is solitary, but often seen with several specimens in a clump. It has a thick, reddish-brown layer of loose fiber covers the trunk. It can be solitary or clustering species whose trunk branches high above ground. The somewhat untidy, upright crown consists of numerous, long, arching, pinnate leaves. New leaves are often an attractive dark red color. The fruit is a dull green turning purplish brown or black as it ripens, An interesting and very unusual palm for the tropical and warm temperate/subtropical garden.

Plant in a location that receives full sun. This species does best in soil that is well drained. Water regularly and take care not to let soil dry out in between waterings. Feed regularly during the growing season with a high quality palm fertilizer.
