Formerly known as Dypsis utilis, this species was transferred to the genus Vonitra following molecular phylogenetic studies that demonstrated many traditional Dypsis species represented several distinct evolutionary lineages rather than a single natural genus. This is a solitary palm with a thick trunk often covered with fibrous leaf bases.  It is endemic to humid rainforests, where it grows in warm, moist conditions from lowland forests into lower montane elevations. Mature palms feature a full crown of lorng, arching pinnate leaves with regularly arranged leaflets, while newly emerging leaves often display striking shades of red or bronze before maturing to deep green. Inflorescences emerge among the leaves, producing numerous small flowers that develop into rounded fruits. Although not among Madagascar's rarest palms, Vonitra utilis remains vulnerable to the continued loss of the island's native rainforests, underscoring the importance of both habitat conservation and cultivation in botanical collections. An interesting and very unusual palm for the tropical and warm temperate/subtropical garden.
