About Voanioala gerardii
This species is found in forests and pandans in swampy valley bottom and on gentle slopes at about 400 m. It is restricted to tropical rain forest on hills surrounding the Bay of Antongil in northeastern Madagascar. It is a massive palm of the forest canopy, with solitary stems to 15–20 m tall and c. 35 m diameter. The stems are distinctively “stepped,” marked with the protruding remains of the leaf bases. The long pinnate leaves are waxy, and stiff, with up to 70 leaflets on each side. It is named after French botanist, Pierre-Marie-Alexis Geroudet.

Cultivation Tips
A very rare, endangered, recently described relative of the coconut from a small rainforest area in northeastern Madagascar. Plant in warm, moist, well drained soil. Slow growing, but it develops long tap roots fast. Requires filtered light as a juvenile.
