About Syagrus pseudococos
This is a solitary feather palm with a smooth, gray trunk that can reach impressive heights and often develops a noticeably robust, slightly swollen appearance near the base. It lacks a true crownshaft, though the leaf bases are tightly arranged and can create a pseudo-crownshaft effect near the top of the trunk. Its full crown is composed of long, gracefully arching pinnate leaves with deep green leaflets arranged in multiple planes, giving the palm a lush and plumose appearance. Branched inflorescences emerge from among the leaves and carry cream-colored flowers followed by large, oval fruits that ripen yellow to orange. Despite its coconut-like appearance—reflected in the species name pseudococos, meaning “false coconut”—it is not closely related to the true coconut palm.

Plant Syagrus pseudococos in a spacious location where its tall stature and broad crown can be appreciated as a specimen palm. Young plants prefer partial shade but transition well to full sun as they mature. It performs best in fertile, well-drained soils with regular organic matter and appreciates slightly acidic to neutral conditions. Water consistently during establishment and through warm growing months, though mature specimens can tolerate brief dry periods. Apply a balanced palm fertilizer three to four times annually to encourage strong growth and prevent nutrient deficiencies common in Syagrus.
