This is a solitary, medium to tall canopy palm renowned for its remarkable cone of stilt roots that elevate the trunk several feet above the forest floor. Native to the humid lowland rainforests of Central America and northern South America, it grows in rich, well-drained soils beneath the rainforest canopy. The slender gray trunk is crowned by a graceful canopy of pinnate leaves with regularly arranged leaflets and a smooth green crownshaft. Branched inflorescences emerge beneath the crownshaft and produce clusters of small flowers that mature into rounded fruits. Although popularly known as the "Walking Palm," the long-held belief that it slowly walks across the forest by producing new stilt roots remains unproven, with modern research suggesting the roots primarily provide stability on uneven ground and in shallow tropical soils. Nevertheless, its distinctive architecture and ecological adaptations have made Socratea exorrhiza one of the most recognizable and frequently discussed palms in tropical rainforest ecology.
