This is a clustering understory palm with slender, often partially subterranean stems that form dense, low-growing colonies across the shaded forest floor. It lacks a crownshaft, with each stem supporting a compact crown of pinnate leaves adapted to low-light tropical environments. The foliage is deep green with neatly arranged, somewhat broad leaflets that give the plant a fuller appearance compared to other members of the genus. Its inflorescences are produced close to the stem and bear small, structured flower clusters typical of understory palms. The fruits are rounded and develop in modest clusters, often partially hidden beneath the foliage, contributing to its subtle yet distinctive presence in the rainforest. The species name “mannii” honors Gustav Mann (1836–1916), a German botanist and plant collector known for his extensive work in tropical Africa.
