About Sabal miamiensis

Native to South Florida, this species was once thought to be extinct in the wild due to the urbanization of its native habitat.  However, recently a stand of healthy mature specimens was observed in an undisclosed location.  This is a smaller palm species with an undergrown stem.  It is distinguishable from other species in the genus by its compact crown.  The yellow green leaves are very costapalmate and can overlap at the ends.  Fruit might be the largest of the genus and turn black when fully ripe.

Climate Zone 9a
Min Temp 20 to 25 degrees F
Leaf Type Costapalmate
Height 4 Ft / 1.2 M
Growth Rate Slow
Conservation Status
Critically Endangered

Cultivation Tips

Select a location that receives full sun to partial shade. Plant in well-drained sandy soil. It can grow in a wide variety of soil types. It is very drought tolerant so it does not require any supplemental water once established.  Feed occasionally with a high quality palm fertilizer.
