About Sabal domingensis
Similar to Sabal palmetto, but more robust. This species has a single trunk that grows straight and erect. The trunk is massive and usually with the upper several feet covered with interlaced leaf bases, left behind when the petioles break and the leaves fall. These eventually reveal leaf scar rings upon the smooth light brown trunk. The large crown has costapalmate leaves which are dull green and cut with deep incisions about halfway to the center. The tip of each segment is split in two, each becoming threadlike at the end. These droop toward the ground providing a graceful recurving appearance.

Cultivation Tips
This species grows well in hot dry inland areas, as well as tropical climates. Plant in a location that receives full sun. It will thrive in light sandy soils. Water occasionally, as this palm is somewhat drought tolerant, maintaining well drained but moist, rich organic mix is important. Do not let the roots sit in standing water. Fertilize tri-annually with a slow time released product.
