This is a solitary palm with a tall, smooth, gray trunk, often thickened at the base and tapering gracefully upwards. A striking green crownshaft encircles the upper trunk, contrasting beautifully with the pale gray stem. The crown holds 10–15 arching pinnate leaves, each stretching 3–4 meters long, with evenly arranged, glossy green leaflets. Its inflorescences emerge just below the crownshaft, bearing creamy white flowers that attract bees and other pollinators. The fruit ripens to a purplish-black drupe, providing food for birds and other wildlife. Interestingly, the name “princeps” means “chief” or “prince” in Latin, an apt nod to its regal appearance and stature in its native Jamaican landscape.
