About Rhapidophyllum hystrix

This is a smaller, clumping palm with stems growing very tightly together from a single base. Its common name comes from the sharp, black needles found along its base. The large fan-shaped fronds are glossy dark green on top and silvery on the undersides. The leaves are split into deeply divided segments. It produces small yellow to brown flowers that grow in clusters at the top of the short inflorescence. Fruit turns reddish-brown when ripe. This species is notable for being one of the most (if not the most) cold hardy palm species. It can withstand temperatures to -15 degrees F. It has been observed growing in zone 5.

Cultivation Tips

Exceptionally cold-tolerant palm adaptable to a wide range of climates. For best results, plant in locations with part shade, but it can tolerate full sun. Water enough to keep the soil moist, but make sure to not overwater. Reduce watering in winter. Feed with a slow-release fertilizer in spring and mulch around the base in winter.
