About Ravenea hildebrandtii

This species is an understory palm with a slender, smooth, gray to brown trunk that is swollen at base. It is topped with a dense canopy of 12-25 arching, laterally oriented leaves. The inflorescence: is comes from within the crown with closely spaced branches and white flowers. Fruit turns yellow when ripe. This species is considered endangered, due to habitat loss.

Cultivation Tips

Plant in a location that receives full shade to partial shade, especially when young. As it matures, it seems to tolerate a more sunny location. It will thrive in rich, well drained soil. Water regularly and do not let soil dry out in between waterings. It is also somewhat cold hardy. Feed regularly during the growing season with a high quality palm fertilizer. Despite being quite optimal for the garden landscape, this species is quite rare in cultivation.
