This is a large, clustering palm that forms dense colonies of robust, trunkless or short-stemmed shoots emerging from a shared base, often dominating sections of lowland rainforest and swampy terrain. It does not possess a crownshaft, with each stem supporting an immense crown of pinnate leaves that can reach extraordinary lengths, creating a bold and highly architectural presence. The foliage is deep green with long, rigid leaflets arranged along thick rachises, giving the crown a full, heavy appearance well suited to humid tropical environments. Its inflorescences are large and borne among the leaves, producing branched flowering structures typical of the genus and capable of supporting substantial fruit production. The fruits are covered in glossy, overlapping scales and develop in dense, pendulous clusters, adding to the palm’s striking visual identity. This species was formally described in 2012, underscoring how even dominant rainforest palms can remain scientifically undocumented until relatively recently.
