About Ptychosperma macarthurii

This palm is a solitary species with a slender, gray trunk with horizontal stripes from old leaf scars. The crownshaft is short and a light green color. It is topped with a crown of feathery dark green fronds that are a pale green beneath. Clusters of small, creamy-white to light green flowers appear seasonally from the base of the crown. The flowers are followed by small, round, green fruits that turn bright red as they ripen. Due to its striking appearance, ease of care and robust growth rate, it is one of the more commonly grown landscape palms in the world.

Cultivation Tips

Macarthur Palms grow in a variety of sun and shade conditions. Trees tolerate a variety of moist, well-drained soils. Not very tolerant of drought and cold. Prune sparingly. Avoid damaging lower trunk and roots. In frost-free areas grow in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in partial shade. Feed regularly during the growing season with a high quality palm fertilizer.
