This is a small to medium-sized understory palm prized for its beautifully spotted foliage. The pinnate leaves are marked with irregular cream or yellow speckles, giving the plant a variegated, almost painterly appearance. These markings are a natural part of the species—not the result of cultivation—which makes it especially prized by collectors.  The inflorescence emerges from the leaves. The flower stalks are relatively short and bear small, cream-colored flowers that attract pollinators in their native range. The blooms are followed by oval, bright red to reddish-orange fruits when mature—each about the size of a marble—offering a vivid contrast against the plant’s dark green, speckled foliage.
