This species is a striking solitary palm that develops a tall, slender trunk crowned by a graceful canopy of large pinnate leaves, making it one of the most impressive members of its genus. Endemic to the mountains of Java, Indonesia, it inhabits cool, humid lower montane and montane forests, where it grows on steep, deep-soiled slopes beneath a moist tropical canopy at medium elevations. Mature specimens produce an elongated, swollen crownshaft and a relatively open crown of massive, arching leaves with widely spaced leaflets that give the palm a bold yet elegant appearance. Its infrafoliar inflorescences emerge below the crownshaft, producing cream-colored flowers followed by ovoid fruits that mature through shades of yellow and red before turning nearly black when fully ripe. Today, this beautiful palm has a restricted distribution within Java's remaining montane forests, where continued habitat protection is essential for preserving one of Indonesia's remarkable endemic palms.
