This is a solitary, trunkless or very short-trunked palm that grows close to the forest floor, with its massive feather-shaped leaves emerging directly from ground level to form a dense, rounded crown. The leaves can reach extraordinary lengths of up to 8 meters, arching gracefully outward and giving the palm a bold, tropical presence in its native rainforest habitat. The flowering structures emerge low among the leaves, and female plants produce large, woody fruit clusters that resemble oversized brown pinecones resting near the ground. Inside these fruits are several large seeds containing a hard, white interior that closely resembles animal ivory in texture and appearance. This remarkable palm is best known as the original source of “vegetable ivory,” a material historically used to make buttons, jewelry, and carved objects before plastics became widespread.
