About Pholidocarpus macrocarpus
This is a striking and stately solitary palm native to the peat swamp and lowland rain forests. It forms a tall, slender trunk, topped by a broad crown of huge costapalmate (fan-shaped) leaves, each leaf up to about 2 m across. The petioles are long, armed with stout spines near the base, often with distinctive yellow-striping along the petiole faces, and the fruits are large, corky-textured drupes up to 10-15 cm in diameter — unusual even among large palms.
Because it naturally occurs in tall forest canopies in humid tropical swamps, it is rarely encountered in cultivation and remains somewhat of a collector’s specimen.

Cultivation Tips
Plant it in a location with full sun to bright light, but ensure adequate vertical space for its eventual size and canopy. Use a rich, freely-draining yet moisture-retentive soil — its native swamp and peat-forest roots indicate it appreciates consistently moist conditions (though never waterlogged), so maintain steady moisture and good drainage. Because of its size potential and tropical origins, it is not suitable for temperate or frost-prone areas; in marginal climates container-culture or greenhouse steps are advisable. Finally, fertilizer lightly with palm-specific nutrients and ensure ample space — this is a long-term specimen requiring patience, generous room and humid conditions.
