This is a solitary fan palm that develops a stout, upright trunk marked by closely spaced leaf scars and a robust, architectural presence as it matures. A prominent green crownshaft sits atop the trunk, formed by tightly clasping leaf bases that give the upper stem a smooth, columnar appearance. The crown holds a dense cluster of very large, circular palmate leaves that can reach several meters across, with stiff segments radiating outward to create one of the most dramatic fan displays among Southeast Asian palms. Its inflorescences emerge below the crownshaft and branch into multiple slender rachillae that carry numerous small flowers. These develop into rounded fruits that typically ripen from green to dark purple or black, adding ornamental interest beneath the canopy.
