About Phoenix roxburghii

This species was formally described and recognized as distinct in 2025, following detailed taxonomic revision that clarified its separation from Phoenix sylvestris.  It is a tall, solitary palm that develops a robust, upright trunk marked with prominent leaf-scar rings and a commanding, classic date-palm silhouette. Unlike many members of the genus, it lacks a crownshaft, instead producing a dense crown of long, arching pinnate leaves that radiate outward with a distinctly tropical presence. The leaves carry stiff yet gracefully arranged leaflets, medium to dark green in color, with armed petioles bearing sharp spines near the base. Its inflorescences emerge among the leaves and produce staminate flowers noted for their distinctive musty scent. The fruits are obovoid and ripen to orange-yellow, larger than those of several closely related species and visually striking when borne in abundance.

Cultivation Tips

As a recently described species, long-term cultivation data for Phoenix roxburghii remains limited. Until species-specific experience becomes more widespread, cultivation practices are best modeled after closely related and morphologically similar palms, particularly Phoenix sylvestris. This palm is best suited to open, sunny planting locations in warm subtropical to tropical climates where it has ample space to develop its full crown. Young plants benefit from light shade during establishment, while mature specimens thrive in full sun. It prefers deep, well-draining soils with moderate fertility and shows good tolerance for seasonal dryness once established. Regular watering during the growing season encourages vigorous growth, though mature palms can tolerate brief dry periods. A balanced palm fertilizer applied two to three times per year supports strong leaf production, healthy trunk development, and fruiting.
