About Phoenix dactylifera

This species is an important agricultural crop, and the sweet fruit it produces, the date, is a staple food in many countries in the Middle East and North Africa. The tree has a single trunk and is topped by a crown of large, feathery fronds. The leaves are often used for thatching roofs, and the tree is also grown for its ornamental value.

Cultivation Tips

Plant in a location that receives full or at least partial sun. They can thrive in any kind of soil including relatively saline soil, but require good drainage. As these palms are drought-tolerant it is advisable to allow for some time between watering and take precautions not to over water. Although the Date Palm is adaptable to differing growing conditions, dates are produced only in hot, dry climates. Feed in the early spring with a high-potassium fertilizer.
