This is an elegant, medium-sized palm native to humid lowland tropical rainforests and other humid habitats, including areas that may experience periodic flooding. The species commonly develops multiple slender stems to form attractive clumps, although solitary specimens may also occur. Its graceful crown consists of large pinnate leaves that can approach 16 feet (5 m) long, each carrying numerous narrow leaflets. Newly emerging leaves can be particularly striking, often displaying rich reddish-bronze tones before gradually transitioning to mature green. Inflorescences emerge below the leaves and produce small flowers followed by oval shaped fruits that mature from green to deep purple or purplish-black.  Beyond its ornamental appeal, the palm has considerable ethnobotanical value, with its fruits, stems and leaves traditionally used for food, construction, thatching and other purposes.
