This species is native to rainforests and tropical wet zones at low to medium elevations and is widespread across Central America and Northern South America.  It is a tall solitary palm with a slender trunk ringed with leaf scars.  Its crown is topped with upright, feather shaped olive green leaves.   New leaves emerge maroon in color.  The petioles are covered with brown and black fibers.  When in bloom, the branched inflorescence produces small yellow flowers.  The oval shaped fruit turns purplish as it ripens.
