About Metroxylon amicarum
This is a solitary, towering palm that thrives in humid, lowland forests and freshwater swamps. Its smooth gray trunk rises straight and slender, with widely spaced ring scars and a fibrous upper stem where old leaf bases cling before eventually shedding cleanly. The immense pinnate leaves, up to 20 feet long, create a broad, feathery crown that sways easily in coastal winds. Its axillary inflorescences produce large, golden-brown fruits covered in glossy, overlapping scales that protect a hard, ivory-like seed once carved into buttons and ornaments. Unlike most of its relatives, this species is not strictly monocarpic, allowing it to live and flower multiple times — a rare trait within the genus.
