This species may be solitary or clustering. It is a tall species that typically features a slender, light grayish-brown trunk. It is often found in wetlands or near riverbanks The bright green leaves are large, with numerous leaflets that are arranged in a fan-like appearance. The inflorescence produces long, branched clusters with yellow to cream-colored flowers. The fruit of is small, round, and typically black or dark purple when mature. This species has numerous commercial uses for its trunk, leaves and fruit.

This species thrives in tropical climates with warm temperatures year-round. It prefers areas with high humidity and can tolerate occasional flooding, making it ideal for wetland conditions. It prefers full sun to partial shade. While it can tolerate some shade, optimal growth and leaf production occur in bright, direct sunlight. Plant in well-draining soil rich in organic matter;. loamy or sandy soils with good moisture retention are preferred. Ensure that the soil pH is slightly acidic to neutral.
