About Mauritia flexuosa
This is a solitary species with a pale gray trunk covered with dark rings of leaf base scars. The crown is topped with 8-20 large, dark green fan shaped leaves, circular in shape and deeply split in the middle. Each half of the leaf is divided into numerous narrow leaflets, which have small spines along the margin. The petiole is unarmed. When in bloom, the branched inflorescence can be up to 2 m long and emerges from between the leaves. These flowering branches bear small cream-colored unisexual flowers. The edible fruit is round to oval shaped and covered with reddish brown overlapping scales. Fruit turns yellow to orange as it ripens.

Cultivation Tips
In habitat, this species can typically be found growing on swampy or seasonally flooded lands with poor drainage and acid soil. Plant in a location that has plenty of space and receives full sun. Water regularly and take care not to let the soil dry out in between watering. Feed regularly during the growing season with a high quality palm fertilizer.
