About Masoala rasobotsyi

This newly identified palm is found in southeastern Madagascar, specifically in the Ifanadiana region. It was first described based on a specimen found at the Ranomafana Arboretum.  This solitary species forms a medium-sized trunk ringed with leaf scars and topped by a dense crown of gracefully arching leaves. The open leaf sheaths spread wide with gently wavy edges, and their undersides are covered in soft, pale hairs that give the crown a subtle silvery glow when viewed from below.  Its crown carries 20 or more pinnate leaves stretching over 3 m (10 ft) long, each with nearly 100 narrow leaflets per side, deep green above and faintly pale beneath, creating a full, feathery canopy. The inflorescences emerge among the leaves, first arching outward before hanging vertically, their tawny, woolly texture making them stand out against the smooth green foliage. Its fruits closely resemble those of Masoala madagascariensis, marked by a small tip where the flower once attached. Since only one known plant exists—grown from seed collected between Ifanadiana and Kianjavato in southeastern Madagascar—fully mature fruit are still a rare sight.

Cultivation Tips

This species likely prefers a sheltered, humid garden location that replicates its rainforest origins, protected from strong winds and cool, dry air. Young plants thrive best in bright filtered light or partial shade, while mature specimens can gradually tolerate more sun in consistently warm climates. Rich, well-draining loam with high organic content provides the ideal substrate, and soil should be kept evenly moist without waterlogging. Water regularly during warm months and reduce slightly in cooler seasons, avoiding prolonged dryness. Apply a balanced palm fertilizer at half-strength every two to three months during active growth to encourage steady but measured development, as this genus is known for its naturally slow growth rate.
