About Livistona chinensis
This species is very common in cultivation. It has a straight, grey-brown trunk, and its base is somewhat swollen. The trunk is capped with an evergreen dense crown of palmate leaves that hang downward. Petioles of juvenile palms are spiny, but have few or no spines as they mature. Young specimens are slow to form a trunk, which has led to the unfortunate practice of planting these palms close together as a ground cover. Eventually, most of those closely planted palms will have to be removed to accommodate their large spread. It produces yellow-cream inflorescence flowers that are shorter than the leaves, thus making them inconspicuous. Flowers are then followed by small, oval shaped fruits. The fruit starts out green, turns to dark blue then to blue-gray when they are ripe.

Cultivation Tips
These palms thrive in full sun to partial shade, which means they require between six and eight hours of bright sun on most days. Young palms prefer shade, particularly from the hot summer sun. If there is good drainage, these palms can tolerate a wide range of soil types including sandy and clay. They thrive in rich loamy soil with a PH at ranges from slightly acidic to neutral. It is considered a drought-tolerant plant, so it does not need much water, especially if it is getting rainwater because it is growing outdoors. During the growing season, you can give the plant a little bit more water if it seems dry to the touch, but always check the soil before watering it so that you do not risk overwatering the palm. Feed occasionally during the growing season with a high quality palm fertilizer.
