This small sized solitary palm species is native to the lowland rainforests. It has slender stems and is best known for its large, nearly circular palmate leaves, deeply pleated with only a few segments, of which the middle ones are joined halfway.  The inflorescence emerges from among the leaves, forming a modest, branched structure with clusters of small, creamy white flowers that are typically unisexual. Once pollinated, these give rise to bright red to orange fruits, each about the size of a marble. The fruit matures slowly and adds a splash of vivid color against the palm’s cool-toned foliage.
