About Licuala sp. Rabaul
This is a provisional/locality label for an as-yet-unpublished Licuala from around Rabaul (East New Britain, Papua New Guinea); treat it as an undescribed population rather than an accepted species. It is a solitary, understory palm that is stemless to short-trunked when young, later developing a slender, ringed stem. Leaves are divided into many narrow, evenly spaced segments with tips that appear praemorse; long, slim petioles support the leaf and any marginal armature is not evident on the observed plant. Inflorescences emerge from within the leaves with long, hanging pendent rachillae “bead-like strings” with many flowers that hang well below the crown. The fruit are oval shape drupes, shown from green through orange as they ripen.
