This is a magnificent solitary fan palm that slowly develops a stout gray trunk. Its enormous nearly circular, costapalmate leaves are deeply divided into broad, gracefully drooping segments that create one of the boldest tropical displays in the palm world. Large branched inflorescences emerge from within the crown, producing numerous small creamy-white flowers that later develop into brilliant red fruits. The colorful fruit is an important food source for birds and other rainforest wildlife, helping disperse the seeds throughout its native habitat. Native to tropical rainforests, this spectacular species thrives in warm, humid forests with abundant rainfall.
