About Licuala mattanensis var. paucisecta

This is a stunning understory palm native to tropical rainforests, where it grows beneath the forest canopy in warm, humid conditions. This small, solitary palm is best known for its remarkable circular leaves, which are divided into relatively few broad segments and display a striking geometric appearance. The leaf surface displays a striking pattern of geometric sections, creating an almost mosaic-like appearance that distinguishes this species from nearly all other palms. The nearly perfect symmetry of the foliage has made this palm one of the most sought-after ornamental Licualas in cultivation.  Mature plants typically remain compact, producing a short or nearly trunkless stem topped by a crown of spectacular pleated leaves. Mature palms produce branched inflorescences that emerge from among the leaves, bearing numerous small flowers arranged along slender flowering stalks. Following pollination, the palm develops clusters of small, rounded fruits that ripen from green to shades of red or reddish-orange. Because of its exceptional beauty and manageable size, this species is widely regarded as one of the most ornamental understory palms available to collectors.

Cultivation Tips

This species performs best in bright shade or filtered light, where its delicate leaves are protected from intense afternoon sun. The species prefers rich, organic, well-drained soils that retain moisture without becoming waterlogged. Consistent watering is important, as the palm does not tolerate prolonged drought and responds best when soil moisture remains relatively even throughout the year. High humidity promotes lush growth and helps maintain pristine foliage, making this species particularly well suited to tropical and subtropical climates, greenhouses, shade houses, and indoor conservatories. Protect the palm from cold temperatures and drying winds, as leaf damage can occur when environmental conditions become unfavorable. Regular applications of a balanced palm fertilizer during the growing season will support healthy foliage production and overall vigor.
