About Licuala ferruginea
This is a solitary understory palm with a slender trunk that typically stays small and rarely exceeds a few meters in height. The crown displays deeply divided, fan-shaped leaves that can be split into many narrow, drooping segments, each with pointed tips. A covering of rusty-brown (ferruginous) hairs is often present on the leaf undersides and young leaf sheaths, which is the feature behind its species name. Inflorescences emerge among the leaves, carrying many short rachillae that are lightly hairy and bear small cream to whitish flowers. The fruit matures into a red to orange drupe, attractive but small in size.

Cultivation Tips
Select a shaded garden spot that mimics its native rainforest floor habitat. When young, it needs filtered to deep shade, but mature specimens can handle brighter light if protected from harsh midday sun. This palm prefers moist, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. Regular watering is important, as it dislikes drying out completely, though it should not sit in stagnant water. A balanced palm fertilizer applied two to three times per year helps maintain strong leaf color and steady growth, though its natural pace is quite slow.
