This is a small, understory palm that typically grows as a solitary plant with a very short or mostly hidden trunk, often appearing almost stemless in the wild. It does not form a crownshaft, and instead carries its leaves close to the ground in a neat, compact arrangement. The leaves are fan-shaped and deeply divided, with a softly textured look that gives the plant a refined, almost ornamental presence rather than a bold tropical one. Flower clusters emerge low on the plant near the base of the leaves, staying mostly tucked within the foliage and never becoming showy. These are followed by small, rounded fruits that darken as they ripen, completing a very subtle and understated reproductive display. This species is rarely seen in cultivation and remains largely unfamiliar even among experienced palm growers. This species was just formally described as a new palm species in 2025, following detailed fieldwork and genetic analysis that confirmed it as distinct from all previously known Lanonia.
