About Korthalsia laciniosa

This is a clustering, high-climbing rattan palm native across tropical Southeast Asia and develops long, branching stems that use surrounding vegetation for support rather than forming a self-supporting trunk. Its leaf sheaths are armed with sparse spines and produce a distinctive elongated ocrea that gradually frays into a fibrous, net-like structure—one of the most recognizable features of the species. The crown carries relatively broad, diamond-shaped pinnate leaflets that are bright green above and noticeably pale or chalky beneath, giving the foliage an attractive contrast. Large branched inflorescences emerge from mature stems and are followed by flattened, orange-red scaly fruits. Like several species in the genus, it is notable for its fascinating ecological relationship with ants, which commonly inhabit the protective ocreas and may help defend the palm from herbivores, making this one of the more unusual palms in the world.

Cultivation Tips

Select a location where it has space to climb and spread, ideally in a humid tropical garden or conservatory setting. Young plants prefer filtered light or bright shade, while mature specimens naturally seek stronger light as they ascend into the canopy. Use rich, organic, well-draining soil that retains consistent moisture without becoming waterlogged. Water regularly and avoid prolonged drying, as this species originates from humid lowland and hill forests. Apply fertilizer lightly but consistently during active growth and remember that this species is better suited for collectors and botanical gardens than typical landscape use due to its climbing habit and spiny growth.
