Diminuitve understory palm species.  It produces an almost stemless trunk, rarely more than a few inches tall and typically hidden within persistent leaf sheaths, making it one of the smallest known palms in the world.  The crown consists of just a few delicate leaves.  Its inflorescence is interfoliar, bearing male and female flowers on branched rachillae that are closely held within the clump.  The fruit is ovoid, small, and turns bright red when ripe, visually striking against the forest floor litter and used to identify the plant in habitat.  This species is exceptionally rare in cultivation due to its small size, slow growth, and narrow ecological niche in Borneo’s hill rainforests.  Originally described by Odoardo Beccari, it remains taxonomically distinct due to its extreme dwarfism, which sets it apart even within the genus.
