About Hemithrinax ekmaniana
This species could possibly be one of the rarest palms on the planet. It was found in northern Cuba. Today, this palm survives only on three of the small mogotes where it was rediscovered in 1978 by a group of paleontologists and naturalists. It has a gray trunk holding a spherical and very dense crown of stiff, spiky light green leaves that have almost no stalks and therefore sit very close together. A very unique looking palm, its crown grows into a spiny giant green ball. With the exception of a handful of plants in botanical collections, this species has not yet been introduced into cultivation.

Cultivation Tips
Sunny, moist, but well drained position. It will do well in tropical and a number of warm temperate climates, given a position in full sun, and a very well drained soil. It can also take considerable coastal exposure. Because of its appearance, this species has great ornamental potential and would suitable for tropical and subtropical climates. It appears to be tolerant of a wide range of soil types and is also drought tolerant.
