This is a diminutive, understory palm with an exceptionally slender trunk. Its defining feature is its extraordinary bifid leaves, which emerge in dramatic shades of orange, red, bronze, maroon, and green with mottled variegation resembling stained glass—an effect virtually unique among palms. As the leaves mature, much of the intense coloration fades but often retains attractive mottling and textural corrugation. The inflorescence is short, simple to sparsely branched, emerging among the leaves and carrying small cream-colored flowers typical of the genus. Fruits are small, rounded to ovoid, and darken toward black when ripe. This species is extremely rare in cultivation and highly sought after among collectors due to its unmatched juvenile foliage coloration.
