This is a slender, clustering palm that produces multiple thin trunks arising from a common base, forming elegant colonies in its native habitat. The trunks are smooth and relatively narrow, typically topped by a well-defined green crownshaft formed by the tightly wrapped leaf bases. The crown consists of graceful pinnate leaves with numerous narrow leaflets that arch outward, giving the palm a light and airy appearance typical of the genus. The inflorescences emerge from beneath the crownshaft and branch into many fine rachillae that bear small flowers. These flowers develop into clusters of small, rounded fruits that ripen to dark purple or black and are an important food source for wildlife.  The species name “catinga” refers to the distinctive Amazonian white-sand ecosystems (campinarana) where this palm naturally occurs—nutrient-poor environments that support a unique and specialized flora.
