About Eremospatha wendlandiana
This is a clustering, climbing rattan palm that produces long, slender, flexible stems capable of scrambling through dense tropical forest vegetation. It lacks a crownshaft, with each stem bearing pinnate leaves equipped with specialized climbing structures such as whip-like extensions armed with recurved spines that help anchor the palm as it ascends. The leaves are deep green with narrow, regularly arranged leaflets, giving the plant a refined yet highly functional appearance suited to its climbing habit. Its inflorescences emerge along the stems and produce branched flowering structures typical of rattan palms. The fruits are small and covered in overlapping scales, developing in clusters following pollination. The species name “wendlandiana” honors Hermann Wendland (1825–1903), a German botanist known for his work on palms and other tropical plants.
