About Elaeis guineensis
Endemic to Africa, this species is now widely distributed as a plantation species. It is widely cultivated around the world for its edible oil; currently Malaysia has the largest population. It thrives in moist tropical forests. The palm is a large, solitary palm with a trunk often concealed with the skirt of old fronds. Its crown has 40-60 dark green pinnate leaves that can be up to 8 meters long. The small flowers are white or cream colored, growing in clusters on long inflorescence stalks which emerge from the stem. The fruit becomes orange or red when ripe. Each fruit contains a single, elongated seed or kernel, which is the source of the palm oil.

Cultivation Tips
This species is a tropical palm, requires warm temperatures, high humidity, and plenty of rainfall. Plant in a location where it receives full sun to partial shade. It will thrive in well-drained, fertile soils, but will tolerate a variety of soil types, including sandy and clay soils, Apply a balanced fertilizer at regular intervals throughout the growing season.
