About Cyrtostachys renda 'Apple'

This is a clustering lipstick palm selection with multiple slender stems rising tightly from the base and marked with elegant leaf-ring scars. The crownshafts and upper stems glow in vivid red to orange-red tones, often showing a fine speckled or mottled pattern reminiscent of apple skin, which gives this cultivar its name. Above the bright crownshaft, the palm carries a neat crown of pinnate leaves with narrow, dark green leaflets that arch outward to form a light, feathery canopy. Inflorescences emerge below the crownshaft and eventually give way to small ovoid fruits that mature from green to deep purplish-black, much like typical Cyrtostachys renda. Because this form is rare in cultivation and usually circulated among specialist growers and botanical collections, ‘Apple’ is considered a collector’s palm and a showpiece for truly tropical gardens.

Cultivation Tips

Select the warmest, most humid spot you can offer, ideally in a tropical or near-tropical garden or a well-controlled greenhouse. It performs best in bright filtered light to gentle morning sun, avoiding harsh, drying afternoon exposure, especially while young. Plant it in a rich, organic, acidic mix that stays consistently moist—think peat, fine bark, and well-drained loam—while making sure water can still drain away and not stagnate around the roots. This palm resents drought, so keep the soil evenly damp and maintain high ambient humidity with overhead misting or nearby water features if grown in a container. Protect it from wind and any temperatures below about 50°F (10°C), and feed lightly but regularly with a balanced, slow-release palm fertilizer during the warm, active growing season.
