This is a solitary fan palm native to dry, open woodlands, savannas and coastal areas in eastern Cuba.  It develops a slender trunk typically wrapped in persistent fibers, giving it a rugged and textured appearance. The crown is composed of circular, deeply divided costapalmate leaves that are dark green above but striking silvery-white beneath, creating a dramatic effect when moved by wind. Its inflorescences emerge among the leaves and produce small flowers followed by rounded fruits that mature to black. This species is adapted to dry, open habitats including coastal and sandy environments and is regarded as one of the more drought-tolerant members of the genus. Although not commonly encountered in cultivation, its silver foliage and elegant habit make it highly desirable among collectors.
