About Chelyocarpus ulei

This is a small, solitary understory palm native to the western Amazon Basin, where it grows primarily in wet lowland rainforest, including both seasonally flooded areas. It has a slender trunk. The open crown typically carries 10–15 striking fan-shaped leaves, with blades on long petioles. The blades are deeply divided into broad segments that are further split toward their tips, while their undersides have a distinctive silvery-white appearance. Inflorescences emerge among the leaves and develop small flowers with cream to purplish tones. Small round fruits turn light brown at maturity and develop an unusual corky, wart-like surface. An especially interesting feature of C. ulei is its unusual floral structure: it has been noted as exceptional among palms for normally producing flowers with parts arranged in twos rather than the three-part arrangement typical of the family.

Cultivation Tips

This palm is best suited to a warm, humid tropical garden in a sheltered location protected from drying winds and prolonged cool conditions. As an understory rainforest palm, young plants should be grown in filtered light or partial shade; established specimens can tolerate brighter conditions and potentially considerable sun where humidity and soil moisture remain high. A rich, organic soil that retains consistent moisture while still draining freely should best approximate its native habitat, and plants should not be allowed to remain dry for extended periods. Regular watering is appropriate, particularly during warm weather, with somewhat less irrigation during cooler or slower-growing periods. A balanced palm fertilizer containing appropriate micronutrients can be applied lightly during active growth rather than heavily feeding this naturally modest-growing rainforest species. This species remains rare in cultivation.
