This is a small, solitary palm with slender, canelike stems, giving mature specimens a refined and elegant tropical appearance. Its bifid leaves are especially ornamental, with narrow, arching segments and striking new foliage that emerges deep maroon to red, sometimes displaying attractive mottled coloration before gradually hardening to dark green. The inflorescences emerge among the leaf bases, although the flowers and fruit of plants circulating under the ‘Kainlas’ name remain poorly documented. Believed to originate in the rainforests of western New Guinea, this palm remains very rare in cultivation and is highly valued by collectors for its colorful emerging foliage, exceptionally dark mature leaves and compact understory habit.
