This is a clustering, climbing rattan palm characterized by slender, spiny stems that scramble through surrounding vegetation using specialized whip-like extensions. Like other members of the genus, it lacks a true trunk crown and instead produces long, pinnate leaves armed with sharp spines along the petioles and leaf sheaths. These leaves are adapted for climbing, with modified leaf tips that help the palm anchor itself to nearby trees and shrubs. The inflorescences emerge among the leaf bases and are relatively compact compared to the overall length of the stems, producing small, rounded fruits typical of rattans. This species is native to Indonesia, where it occurs in lowland to lower montane tropical forests, often in humid, shaded environments. Calamus moti is rare in cultivation, largely due to its climbing habit, formidable armament, and highly specific rainforest growing requirements.
