About Calamus jenkinsianus

This is a robust climbing rattan palm native to tropical and subtropical regions of South and Southeast Asia, where it grows primarily in humid forests and along forest margins. Unlike self-supporting palms, it develops long, slender, cane-like stems that climb through surrounding vegetation, using specialized hooked structures associated with its leaves to secure itself as it ascends toward the forest canopy. Its pinnate leaves are composed of numerous narrow, green leaflets arranged along an elongated rachis, while the leaf sheaths and other portions of the plant are armed with formidable spines. Mature plants can develop remarkably long stems as they scramble through trees and neighboring vegetation, giving the species a sprawling, vine-like appearance despite its identity as a true palm. The inflorescences emerge from among the leaves and eventually produce rounded to ovoid fruits covered with the distinctive overlapping scales typical of rattans, which mature through yellowish to reddish-brown tones depending on their stage of development. In its native range, it is valued as a source of rattan cane and has traditionally been harvested for weaving, furniture, baskets and other practical uses.

Cultivation Tips

This species is best suited to warm, humid tropical or subtropical conditions that approximate the moist forest environments of its native range. It performs well in rich, organically fertile, well-drained soil that retains consistent moisture, particularly while the plant is young and becoming established, but prolonged waterlogging should be avoided. Young plants generally appreciate partial shade or filtered light, while established specimens can reach into brighter conditions as their climbing stems ascend through surrounding vegetation. Regular watering is beneficial during warm weather, and a layer of organic mulch can help conserve soil moisture while contributing nutrients as it decomposes. As a climbing rattan, it should be provided with sturdy trees, large supports or other structures upon which its increasingly long stems can climb, and growers should allow considerable room for its eventual spread. Its numerous hooked spines make careful placement particularly important, and the palm should be kept well away from frequently traveled paths, patios and other areas where people may brush against the stems or leaves. Consistently warm temperatures are preferred, and the species should be protected from frost and prolonged periods of cold. Container cultivation is possible when plants are young, but its vigorous climbing habit and eventual dimensions make permanent in-ground cultivation in a suitably spacious climate the more practical choice for mature specimens.
