Cultivation Tips

This species performs best when given a vertical or horizontal support structure in a warm, humid part of the garden where it can climb naturally or sprawl along the ground.  It should be grown in bright filtered light or partial shade, especially when young, as direct sun may scorch its decorative foliage; mature plants can tolerate more light with acclimation.  A rich, well-draining but moisture-retentive tropical soil blend with high organic content is ideal, mimicking the loose forest floors of its native habitat.  Water frequently to keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid standing water at the base to prevent rot—humidity is especially important for young plants.  Fertilize lightly every six to eight weeks during the growing season with a diluted, balanced fertilizer, avoiding overfeeding due to the plant’s relatively slow growth and sensitivity to salt buildup.
