This is a slender, clustering, spiny, climbing rattan palm which grows in the dense understory of humid tropical and subtropical forests. Its thin, flexible stems extend outward and upward by using specialized hook-like extensions of the leaves to anchor onto surrounding vegetation, allowing it to reach toward available light without developing a thick, self-supporting trunk. The leaves are feather-shaped and armed with sharp spines along the leaf sheaths and stems, a characteristic defensive feature of rattan palms. Flowering structures emerge from among the leaves and produce small, scaled fruits typical of the genus, containing a single seed. This species was formally described in 1986 and remains poorly known, with very few documented populations, making it one of the more obscure endemic rattans of southern China.
