Native to the tropical rainforests, this species is a vigorous clustering, climbing palm in the rattan group. It is notable for its whip-like canes, bristling with backward-curving spines that help it scramble up through the dense forest canopy.  Its pinnate leaves can stretch over 2 meters long and are armed along the midrib with fine spines. The plant’s most distinctive feature, however, is the flagellum—a long, wiry, modified inflorescence bristling with hooks that anchors the palm to nearby vegetation as it climbs.  The inflorescence is branched, bearing both male and female flowers.  Its fruit is round, scaly and turns a reddish color when ripe, which is typical of rattans.  Rattan from Calamus species is traditionally harvested for furniture, canes, and weaving.
